Geoff Keighley confirmó hace unas semanas que The Game Awards no se cancelarían debido a la pandemia y que ya estaba buscando maneras de celebrarlos de manera digital. El periodista y anfitrión ha mantenido su palabra ya que recientemente acaban de anunciar los títulos nominados para cada categoría de este año.
Este año se han estrenado varias categorías relacionadas con los Esports, como el mejor evento del año, mejor jugador profesional, entrenador y comentarista. También se estrena la categoría en la que se premia a los títulos que han destacado por su accesibilidad para personas con discapacidades físicas y repiten las mismas categorías de años anteriores.
